Psalm 94:19

In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.

Why it is worth knowing

  1. The writer is honest that his thoughts were many and unsettled, and the psalm makes room for that
  2. Comfort is something God gives, and the writer says it reached his soul
  3. When he felt his foot slipping, God’s loving kindness held him up
  4. The verse is short enough to say in the middle of a sleepless hour

Where it sits: Psalm 94:17-19

Unless Yahweh had been my help, my soul would have soon lived in silence. When I said, “My foot is slipping!” Your loving kindness, Yahweh, held me up. In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.

Background

Psalm 94 is a prayer for justice from someone surrounded by people who do harm and seem to get away with it. In the middle of the complaint the writer turns inward. Just before this verse he remembers saying, “My foot is slipping!” and finding that God’s loving kindness held him up. The Hebrew word for “thoughts” here is used for troubled, unsettled thoughts; it appears again in Psalm 139:23.
