Money and Contentment
Hebrews 13:5-6
Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.” So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
The trainer needs JavaScript. Read it aloud, cover it with your hand, and say it.
Why it is worth knowing
- The command is about the love of money, and it is paired with being content with what you have
- The reason given is a promise: “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you”
- The Greek piles up negatives, which the World English Bible carries as “in no way” twice
- The reader is given words to say back: “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear.”
Where it sits: Hebrews 13:5-8
Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.” So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Remember your leaders, men who spoke to you the word of God, and considering the results of their conduct, imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Background
Hebrews was written to believers under pressure, some of whom had already had their possessions taken because of their faith (Hebrews 10:34). Near the end of the letter the writer turns to daily life, and money comes up next to love, hospitality and marriage. The reason given for contentment is God’s own promise, close to his words to Joshua (Joshua 1:5), and the reader answers it with words from Psalm 118:6.
