Why it is worth knowing
- “Cast” is an active, decisive verb, not gently placing but throwing the burden onto God
- “Sustain” means to nourish, supply, and uphold: comprehensive support
- “He will never allow the righteous to be moved”: ultimate stability guaranteed
- Peter paraphrases this verse in 1 Peter 5:7, confirming its New Testament relevance
Where it sits: Psalm 55:22-23
Cast your burden on Yahweh and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved. But you, God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

Background
Psalm 55 is one of David’s most raw and personal laments: he has been betrayed by a close friend, and his distress is overwhelming. He describes wanting to flee like a bird to the desert. The counsel to “cast your burden on Yahweh” comes not from a position of calm but from within the storm. The Hebrew for “burden” can also mean “what he has given you”: the load God has assigned is to be returned to him in prayer. The psalm ends as it must: “But I will trust in you”, not resolution of circumstances but renewed commitment to God.
