Psalm 4:8

Sleep in Peace

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.

Why it is worth knowing

  1. He will “both lay myself down and sleep”: he lies down, and he actually sleeps
  2. Safety is credited to God alone: “you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety”
  3. The gladness of verse 7 is greater than the joy of a full harvest
  4. The psalm ends with sleep, and nothing in it says the distress of verse 1 is over

Where it sits: Psalm 4:6-8

Many say, “Who will show us any good?” Yahweh, let the light of your face shine on us. You have put gladness in my heart, more than when their grain and their new wine are increased. In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.

Background

Psalm 4 is a psalm of David, often read as a prayer for the end of the day. It opens with a call for help in distress and speaks to people chasing what is empty. Many around him ask, “Who will show us any good?” David answers that God has put gladness in his heart, more than a good harvest brings, and the psalm ends with him lying down to sleep.
