Anxiety and God's Care

1 Peter 5:7

casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

Why it is worth knowing

  1. “Casting” is an active, deliberate throw, not a gradual release
  2. “All” your anxieties, not just the spiritual ones or the big ones
  3. The basis for casting is not our strength but his care
  4. God’s care for you is personal and specific, not general

Where it sits: 1 Peter 5:6-9

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.

Background

Peter wrote to scattered, suffering Christians across Asia Minor who faced persecution and social exclusion. The command to cast anxieties connects directly to humility: trusting God with what we cannot control is itself an act of humility. The Greek word for “cast” (epirripto) is the same word used when disciples threw their cloaks on a colt for Jesus to ride. It is an act of purposeful placing, not passive release.
