Romans 12:1

Romans 12:1

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.

Why it is worth knowing

  1. “Therefore” connects the ethical call to the theological foundation in Romans 1-11
  2. A living sacrifice is paradoxical: the animal died; we live in ongoing surrender
  3. The entire body (life, work, relationships) is the substance of worship
  4. “Spiritual service” (Greek: logike latreia) means reasonable, rational service: the only fitting response

Where it sits: Romans 12:1-2

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Background

Romans 12 marks the great pivot of the letter from theology to practice. Paul has spent eleven chapters explaining the mercies of God: salvation, justification, adoption, the Spirit, sovereignty in all things. Now, on the basis of all that, he asks for one thing: your body. In the Old Testament, sacrifices died. Paul calls for a living sacrifice: a life given to God day after day. The word “present” (paristemi) was used for presenting a soldier for duty or an offering to the altar. This is not emotional surrender but deliberate, bodily dedication of the whole self.
