Mission and Commission
Matthew 28:19-20
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Why it is worth knowing
- The Great Commission flows from Jesus’ authority, not our ability
- Making disciples is the central mission: going, baptizing, and teaching are all in service of it
- The scope is all nations: no ethnic or geographic boundaries
- The promise of Jesus’ presence frames the entire command
Where it sits: Matthew 28:16-20
But the eleven disciples went into Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had sent them. When they saw him, they bowed down to him; but some doubted. Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Background
These are among the last recorded words of Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel, spoken on a mountain in Galilee after his resurrection. He opens with a declaration of absolute authority: heaven and earth both belong to him. On the foundation of that authority, he commissions his disciples to extend his kingdom to every nation. The passage closes with the same comfort that opened Joshua’s ministry: “I am with you.”
