John 8:32

Truth and Freedom

John 8:32

You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

Why it is worth knowing

  1. Freedom in Scripture is not freedom from all constraint but freedom from sin and deception
  2. “Know” here is experiential, not just intellectual knowledge but personal encounter
  3. Truth is not abstract but personal: Jesus calls himself “the truth” in John 14:6
  4. The promise is to those who abide in Christ’s word (the preceding verse)

Where it sits: John 8:31-36

Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin. A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever. If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Background

This famous verse is often quoted in isolation, but its context is crucial: it is addressed to those who “remain in my word.” The freedom Jesus offers is not political or philosophical: it is freedom from slavery to sin. His audience objected because they thought of freedom in terms of ethnic identity (descendants of Abraham), but Jesus redefines it in terms of moral and spiritual bondage. The ultimate freedom is found not in knowing facts about truth but in knowing the person who is Truth.
