Why it is worth knowing

  1. God knows and holds a specific future for his people
  2. His plans are for flourishing, not harm
  3. This promise was given during a season of suffering and exile
  4. Hope is not wishful thinking: it is grounded in God’s character

Where it sits: Jeremiah 29:10-13

For Yahweh says, “After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You shall seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.

Background

These words were written in a letter from Jeremiah to the Jewish exiles in Babylon: people who had been forcibly removed from their homeland. The promise is given in the middle of seventy years of judgment, not at the end. God was saying: even now, in captivity, I have not abandoned you. My plans for restoration are already in motion.
