God's Faithfulness in Temptation

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Why it is worth knowing

  1. No believer faces a unique temptation: solidarity with all humanity is comforting
  2. God sets limits on temptation: the pressure never exceeds what he allows
  3. There is always a way of escape: God provides it, not just suggests it
  4. The goal is endurance, not mere avoidance

Where it sits: 1 Corinthians 10:12-14

Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall. No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

Background

Paul writes this in the context of warning the Corinthians against overconfidence, using Israel’s failures in the wilderness as cautionary examples. The assurance of verse 13 is not a promise that temptation will be easy or brief: it is a promise that God is faithful even when we are weak. The word for “way of escape” (ekbasis) simply means a way out: God himself provides the exit route. Paul immediately follows with a command to action: “flee from idolatry.”
